How to Dispute a Buy Now Pay Later (BNPL) Charge: Klarna, Afterpay, Affirm Guide
Buy Now Pay Later disputes work differently from credit card chargebacks. Here's how to handle returns, refunds, and billing errors with BNPL providers.
BNPL vs Credit Card Disputes
Unlike credit cards, BNPL disputes don't have the Fair Credit Billing Act's protections. Merchant-initiated refunds are key. During a dispute with Affirm, payments are paused and no negative credit reporting occurs. Klarna and Afterpay have similar dispute processes.
Klarna
Report within 60 days. Klarna pauses scheduled payments during investigation. Return the item to the merchant first. Klarna refund takes 5-7 business days after merchant confirms return.
Afterpay
Return to merchant and request refund through Afterpay app. Remaining installments are automatically cancelled. If only partial refund, remaining installments are adjusted proportionally.
Affirm
Merchant must initiate refund — Affirm cannot cancel loans directly. File a dispute with Affirm within 60 days. During dispute, payments paused. Paid interest is non-refundable even on returned items.
Nuclear Option: Credit Card Chargeback
If you paid the BNPL installment with a credit card, you can still dispute the BNPL charge under the Fair Credit Billing Act. This bypasses the BNPL provider entirely.
Prevention
Always check the merchant's return policy BEFORE using BNPL. Use a credit card for better protection. Set calendar reminders for installment dates. Use Dispute Gremlin templates for formal dispute communications.
